April 1998 AAOS Report
Academy members approved a resolution on physician
group negotiation issues at the annual business meeting in New
Orleans. The resolution states that the Academy "shall work
in concert with the American Medical Association and other appropriate
organizations to promote legal mechanisms to allow physicians
to engage in group negotiations in order to compete in the managed
care environment and to continue to be their patient's advocate."
The Academy will keep the membership informed on physicians group
negotiation issues. The members also approved a resolution to
support educational efforts and continue to support legislation
to encourage the development and use of Medical Savings Accounts
(MSA). The Academy will make efforts to expand the current federal
MSA demonstration project. Also approved was a resolution that
the Academy shall continue to support members who provide nonsurgical
orthopaedic care and that the Academy will provide educational
opportunities of particular interest for members who provide nonsurgical
orthopaedic care.
