August 2004 AAOS Report

Joint Commission will hold conference on wrong-site surgery

An all-day conference on Aug. 23, 2004 will focus on the Joint Commission-developed “Universal Protocol for Preventing Wrong Site, Wrong Procedure, Wrong Person Surgery.” S. Terry Canale, MD, former AAOS president, and David A. Wong, MD, MSc, FRCS, chair of the AAOS Patient Safety Committee, are scheduled to speak at the program, which is focused on improving patient safety by reducing surgical complications and errors. More than 40 professional organizations, including the AAOS, endorse the universal protocol, hailing it as a safety advance that is transferable across health systems and providers.

The conference will show the development of the universal protocol, its application in a variety of health care delivery settings, and an exploration of how patients can participate in safer practices.

The conference will take place in Rosemont, Ill. at a cost of $360 per person. To register by phone, call Joint Commission Resources’ customer service at (877) 223-6866, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. (CST) or send a fax to (317) 610-4022.
