August 1999 AAOS Report
Support needed for Bone and Joint Decade
More than 400 organizations already have committed their support to endorse the years 2000 to 2010 as the Bone and Joint Decade. Since its inception in 1998, orthopaedic surgeons from all over the world have been working together to gain support of the decade. In the latest news, the United Kingdom became the largest nation to date to agree to proclaim 2000-2010 as the Bone and Joint Decade. Several other countries also are endorsing the decade including Bulgaria, Georgia, Hungary, Iran, the Netherlands, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan and Tanzania. In the United States, Texas became the first state to endorse the decade. Several supporting groups in the U.S. currently are at work to obtain President Clinton's endorsement so that the decade will be a nationally recognized event in the U.S. Questions about the Bone and Joint Decade and intended activities can be directed to Mark Wieting, AAOS, vice president, educational programs, (800) 346-2267, ext. 4121 or by e-mail, bjd@aaos.org.
