August 1999 AAOS Report
AAOS featured in national calcium advertisement
The Academy was one of only four organizations included in a full-page USA Today advertisement on June 29 highlighting AAOS support of the "Calcium Summit" - a one-day event, held June 25 in Washington, D.C. The event was organized by the National Dairy Council and Milk Processor Education Program (creators of the Milk Mustache advertisement campaign) to promote the importance of including calcium in the diet to prevent bone problems later in life. The advertisement, also featured in the New York Times, Boston Globe and US News & World Report, included a statement by AAOS Executive Vice President William W. Tipton Jr., MD, that discussed the importance of calcium in preventing osteoporosis. The Academy was one of 250 organizations that signed on as a coalition member of the "Calcium Summit." Other organizations that participated included the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, American Academy of Pediatrics, National Osteoporosis Foundation, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and Arthritis Foundation.
