February 1998 AAOS Report
HCFA issues ruling on advisory opinions
A detailed fact sheet, developed by the Academy’s
Washington, D.C. office, will be placed on the home page explaining
HCFA’s final ruling on how physicians can request an advisory
opinion about whether the referral of Medicare or Medicaid patients
for certain health care services is prohibited under federal law.
Orthopaedic surgeons with questions about the new ruling are encouraged
to contact HCFA staff member Joanne Sinsheimer at (410)
786-4620 before submitting an application. The fact sheet will
include information about cost considerations; how to apply for
an advisory opinion; and requirements needed to qualify for an
advisory opinion.
