February 1999 AAOS Report
Academy public education programs receive attention
Two of the Academy's newest public education programs-"Climb It Safe"
and "Keep active and safe at any age"-have generated a lot of
interest from the media and public. Several syndicated wire
service stories have been developed about each program
that have generated articles in many major newspapers
throughout the U.S. In addition, the Academy has received
more than 6,000 calls on its public service
phone line-(800) 824-BONES-from the public
requesting brochures on each program's topic.
Introduced in 1998, the "Climb It Safe" public
education program educates individuals about the
danger of injuries associated with ladders and
provides safety tips to consumers when using ladders at home.
Introduced in April 1998, "Keep active and safe at any age"
encourages people, especially those individuals age 65 and older,
to remain active and to follow safety precautions while exercising
and participating in recreational activities. Academy members can
request a single copy of each brochure for preview purposes by
contacting Pat Julitz, AAOS, department of communications,
(800) 346-2267, ext. 4123. For large quantities, contact
the Academy's customer service department, (800) 626-6726.
