March 2003 AAOS Report
Boards approve research policy and free Journal subscription, OKO to residents, select fellowship recipients
The Boards of Directors of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons met in New Orleans on Feb. 3 and 4, 2003, and took several actions:
- They approved a new policy on collaboration with external researchers, so there will be a more formalized mechanism for reviewing requests for endorsement, funding, staff assistance and other resources from the Academy to outside organizations and individuals pursuing external research studies, conference and other research-related activities.
- Approved the selections of the first recipients of the new Clinician Scientist Traveling Fellowships, as recommended by Clinical Scientist Programs Committee of the Council on Academic Affairs. The first fellowship awards of $10,000 to each fellow will take place from July 2003 to June 2004. Recipients are Kevin J. Bozic, MD, University of California, with mentors Mark Swiontkowski, MD, and Khaled Selah, MD; and Harry K. Kim, MD, Shriners Hospital, with mentor Thomas Einhorn, MD.
- Approved a Finance Committee recommendation that AAOS provide resident members with free subscriptions to the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and Orthopaedic Knowledge Online.
- Seven individuals retiring from the Board of Councils were recognized for their service, including Peter C. Amadio, MD; S. Terry Canale, MD; Stephan P. England, MD, MPH; Lowry Jones Jr, MD; Alan H. Morris, MD; Andrew J. Weiland, MD, and James N. Weinstein, DO. Also recognized was William W. Tipton Jr., MD, who later this year will assume his new role as medical affairs director.
