Dr. D'Ambrosia named president

"Only our patients have the power to reverse the trends that oversee and constrict our practice," said Robert D. D'Ambrosia, MD, in his first vice presidential address at the 1999 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (Academy) in Anaheim, Calif. "Their insurance premiums fund the managed care system and their taxes fund the Medicare-Medicaid system. We can overcome these trends only through partnership with our patients." During his address, he also encouraged members to volunteer and become involved in programs such as Orthopaedics Overseas and the International Center for Orthopaedic Education. Dr. D'Ambrosia was elected president of the Academy and American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons (Association) - the 501(c)(6) parallel-membership organization. He is joined by S. Terry Canale, MD, first vice president and Richard H. Gelberman, MD, second vice president. Stuart A. Hirsch, MD, was reelected treasurer and William J. Robb III, MD, secretary. Named as members-at-large are Joseph P. Iannotti, MD, and Ramon L. Jimenez, MD. The Board of Directors also includes past presidents James D. Heckman, MD, and Douglas W. Jackson, MD, and members-at-large Thomas P. Schmalzried, MD, and William A. Sims, MD. Other board members are Edward A. Toriello, MD, chairman, Board of Councilors; John R. Tongue, MD, chairman-elect of the Board of Councilors; David A. Halsey, MD, secretary, Board of Councilors; Vernon T. Tolo, MD, chairman, Council of Musculoskeletal Specialty Societies (COMSS); and Richard B. Welch, MD, chairman-elect, COMSS. William W. Tipton Jr., MD, AAOS executive vice president, is ex-officio.
