AAOS and CAC announce new international scholarship program
The AAOS and the Corporate Advisory Council (CAC) announced they are sponsoring a new scholarship program that will enable orthopaedic surgeons from less economically stable nations to attend clinical skills courses held at the Orthopaedic Learning Center (OLC) at AAOS headquarters in Rosemont, Ill. The program will also provide for hospital visits and pairing of scholars with American physician mentors.
Four scholarships in the amount of $3,000 each will be awarded annually and the Academy’s International Committee will select the scholarship winners.
First scholarships awarded
The new program has gotten off to a fast start with the selection of the first scholarship recipients made on February 26. They where chosen by the International Committee’s candidate review subcommittee from 54 applications received from 43 countries. The scholarship winners, along their countries of origin and the OLC courses that they have been selected to attend, include:

The CAC was originally founded in May 1998 to serve as a forum for the exchange of information of mutual concern to the AAOS, the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation, and the orthopaedic industry. Its goals include coordinating the activities of existing entities that address Academy and industry relations, encouraging and supporting public education and public relations programs that increase the public’s awareness of orthopaedic surgery, sharing information and periodically reviewing industry CME courses and research projects and their relationship to the Academy’s efforts, and to coordinate the financial support of industry for the Academy’s educational courses and research projects.
Currently, 40 companies that exhibit at AAOS Annual Meetings are members of the CAC.
