Meet the newest members of the Board of Directors

Six orthopaedic surgeons were introduced as new members of the AAOS Board of Directors at the 2005 Annual Meeting. Although they come from different parts of the country and represent various specialties and professional societies, they all share a strong commitment to the Academy.

James H. Beaty, MD

James H. Beaty, MD

A specialist in pediatric orthopaedics and pediatric trauma, James H. Beaty, MD, is currently chief-of-staff at the Campbell Clinic and professor of orthopaedics at the University of Tennessee-Campbell Clinic, both in Memphis. He earned his medical degree from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine, where he also served a residency in orthopaedic surgery. Dr. Beaty served his general surgery residency at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis and served a fellowship in pediatric orthopaedics at the Alfred I. duPont Institute in Wilmington, Del.

Active in numerous professional organizations, Dr. Beaty has served as president of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS), the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North American (POSNA), the Mid-America Orthopaedic Association (MAOA) and the Tennessee Orthopaedic Society. He is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Medical Association (AMA) and the International Society of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Dr. Beaty has held leadership positions on various AAOS committees, most recently as chairman of the AAOS Committee on Continuing Medical Education, and is a former president of the Orthopaedic Learning Center, a joint venture of AAOS and the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA).

Formerly an associate editor for the Instructional Course Lecture Series of the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (JBJS), Dr. Beaty now serves as a consultant reviewer for the publication. He is also on the editorial board of the Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics, the American Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery, The Joint Letter and the Journal of the Southern Orthopaedic Association. Dr. Beaty has edited three textbooks, including Fractures in Children, authored 48 book chapters and published more than 34 peer-reviewed scientific articles.

A recipient of numerous honors and awards, Dr. Beaty was selected to receive the American Orthopaedic Association (AOA) North American Traveling Fellowship in 1984 and the AOA’s American-British-Canadian (ABC) Traveling Fellowship in 1991.

William L. Healy, MD

William L. Healy, MD

William L. Healy, MD, currently serves as chairman of the department of orthopaedic surgery and a trustee at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Mass. He is also a professor of orthopaedic surgery at the Boston University School of Medicine. Dr. Healy earned his medical degree at the State University of New York School of Medicine in Brooklyn, N.Y., and served his orthopaedic surgery residency at John Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore.

An active member of the AAOS, Dr. Healy is a spokesperson for the Public Education and Media Relations Committee, and has served on the Health Care Financing and International Committees.

He has served the Knee Society on the executive, education and research committees.

Dr. Healy has also been a member of numerous other professional societies including the Hip Society, the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS), the Johns Hopkins Medical and Surgical Society, the Irish American Orthopaedic Society and the AMA. He has served as a consultant for Medicare regarding centers for excellence for total joint arthroplasty, coverage policy for arthroscopy and osteoarthritis, and hospital payment.

Dr. Healy has served as a consultant reviewer and editorial board member for several medical journals including JBJS, the Journal of Arthroplasty and Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research (CORR). He has published more than 85 articles in peer-reviewed journals and written numerous chapters on knee and hip arthroplasty.

Dr. Healy is a recipient of numerous awards and honors including: the 1986 American Shoulder and Elbow Society Award of Distinction; the 1992 AAOS-Japanese Orthpaedic Association Japanese-American Exchange Fellow; and the 1998 Teacher of the Year, Robert E. Leach Teaching Award from Boston University. Dr. Healy was named a top orthopaedic surgeon in the Guide to Top Doctors published by the Center for the Study of Service in Washington, D.C. He was also listed as a “Top Doctor” in the February 2003 issue of Boston Magazine.

Gordon M. Aamoth, MD

Gordon M. Aamoth, MD

A specialist in total knee and hip replacement, Gordon M. Aamoth, MD, is a clinical professor of orthopaedic surgery at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and the director of the private rotation for orthopaedic surgery residents at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. He is also a faculty member at Hennepin County General Hospital in Minneapolis, and in private practice. Dr. Aamoth earned his medical degree at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., and served his residency at the University of California in San Francisco.

Dr. Aamoth is the current director and a past president of the ABOS. He is a member of several other professional organizations including the Association of Bone and Joint Surgeons (ABJS), the AOA and the American Board of Medical Specialties. Active in the AAOS, Dr. Aamoth has been a chairman and member of several committees including the Regional Admissions, Health Care Systems Issues, Membership, Ethics and Resolutions Committees.

The author of the AAOS Code of Ethics for Orthopaedic Surgeons written in 1998, Dr. Aamoth has also written articles for numerous medical journals. He has served as an associate editor for CORR, and a consulting reviewer for the JBJS.

A recipient of numerous awards, Dr. Aamoth received the 2004 Charles Bowles-Bowles Rogers Award from the Hennepin County Medical Society for outstanding achievement in medicine. He has been on the “America’s Top Doctors” list for four consecutive years and has been named a “Top Doctor” by Minneapolis-St. Paul Magazine for nine consecutive years.

Dr. Aamoth was a visiting professor to Hangzhou, China in 1995 and to Havana, Cuba in 2003.

Kristy L. Weber, MD

Kristy L. Weber, MD

A graduate of Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, Kristy L. Weber, MD, served an orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, and research and clinical fellowships at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. She returned to Johns Hopkins and is currently the chief of the orthopaedic oncology division and an associate professor of orthopaedic surgery. She specializes in the treatment of patients with bone and soft tissue tumors.

Dr. Weber is currently a member of the Maryland Orthopaedic Association and has been a member of numerous other medical societies including: the Southern Orthopaedic Association, the Houston Orthopaedic Society, the Texas Orthopaedic Association and the MAOA. She is also a current member of the Musculoskeletal Tumor Society, the AOA, the International Skeletal Society, the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research, the Ruth Jackson Orthopaedic Society, and the Connective Tissue Oncology Society, where she served as a board member from 2001-2004.

Dr. Weber has served in numerous AAOS volunteer positions, including work on both the Musculoskeletal Tumors Evaluation Sub-Committee and the Tumor and Metabolic Disease Program Sub-Committee. She is currently a 2004-2005 Leadership Fellow.

Dr. Weber has published 40 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals and written various chapters on a wide variety of orthopaedic and oncology topics. She has served as a moderator and coordinator for numerous conferences in the United States and Europe.

A 2005 ABJS scholar, Dr. Weber is a recipient of numerous other awards including the 2000 Young Investigator Award from the Connective Tissue Oncology Society and the 2003 ABC Traveling Fellow of the AOA.

Matthew S. Shapiro, MD

Matthew S. Shapiro, MD

Matthew S. Shapiro, MD, is an orthopaedic surgeon and vice president of Orthopaedic Healthcare Northwest in Eugene, Ore. He earned his medical degree from Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City. A specialist in sports injuries, Dr. Shapiro completed a fellowship in sports medicine at the University of California-Los Angeles Medical Center, where he also served as the director of shoulder and elbow service and as assistant clinical professor of orthopaedic surgery.

Dr. Shapiro is active in numerous professional societies, including the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (where he serves on the Self-Assessment Examination Committee), the AANA and the Oregon Medical Association. He currently holds leadership roles with the AAOS Evaluations and Bylaws Committees, and serves on the board of directors for the Oregon Association of Orthopaedics.

The principal reviewer for the American Journal of Sports Medicine, Dr. Shapiro also currently serves on the editorial board for Physician and Sportsmedicine and the Journal of Arthroscopy and Related Research. He has authored or co-authored seven book chapters and published more than 32 peer-reviewed articles.

The recipient of several honors, Dr. Shapiro received the Harrison L. McLaughlin Award for Excellence in Orthopaedic Surgery from Columbia University. He has been appointed to various visiting professorships, including at the Al Falah Military Hospital in the United Arab Emirates, and has given many scientific presentations, both nationally and internationally.

Joseph C. McCarthy, MD

Joseph C. McCarthy, MD

A specialist in total joint arthroplasty and hip arthroscopy, Joseph C. McCarthy, MD, is a clinical professor of orthopaedic surgery at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, and participates in residency training programs for residents from Tufts, the University of Massachusetts and for Otto Aufranc Hip Fellows. Dr. McCarthy is also a staff orthopaedic surgeon at New England Baptist Hospital in Boston, where he served as president of the medical staff. He earned his medical degree from Georgetown University Medical School in Washington, D.C.

Dr. McCarthy is president of the executive committee of the AAHKS and has served on the board of directors for the Hip Society. He is active in several other professional societies, including the International Society of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology, the ABJS, the AOA, the AANA, the Eastern Orthopaedic Association, the New England Orthopaedic Society and the Massachusetts Orthopaedic Association.

The author of two textbooks, Dr. McCarthy has also authored or co-authored 13 book chapters and published more than 44 peer-reviewed articles. He currently serves as a consultant reviewer for the JBJS, CORR, Journal of Arthroplasty, Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and Arthroscopy.

Dr. McCarthy is a 2001 recipient of the Hip Society’s prestigious Otto Aufranc Award. He has also given many scientific presentations, both nationally and internationally.
