RAND survey finds orthopaedists believe too many are trained

Almost three-quarters of 626 orthopaedic surgeons surveyed by RAND as part of the research organization’s orthopaedic work force study believe too many orthopaedic surgeons are being trained.

Almost 90 percent of the orthopaedists said managed care has made practicing medicine more complicated; about one-third said they were no longer enthusiastic about the practice of medicine.

Fifty-six percent of the orthopaedists said they were feeling moderate or a lot of competition from other orthopaedic surgeons.
