Summer Institute blends hands-on, didactic
Get ready to take off to the Great White North this summer for the Summer Institute 2000, September 6-10, in Toronto. In addition to the favorable exchange rate ($1 U.S. = $1.48 Canadian at press time), a trip to Canada will reward participants with four and a half days of intense, relevant and practical education.
"The Summer Institute is a great mid-year update–it’s unique in that there’s a mixture of didactic information combined with hands-on skills courses," says James H. Beaty, MD, chair of Summer Institute 2000. "It’s an opportunity for skill sessions mixed with the newest information and innovations."
In addition, the flexible curriculum allows participants to mix and match courses to fit his or her needs and time requirements.
Based on evaluations from last year, changes have been made to all of the courses. "It’s new and updated," Dr. Beaty says, "We’ve increased the number of areas we’re covering by specialty, and more time will be spent on the hands-on skills side rather than in the lecture hall."
This year’s hands-on surgical skills course offerings include management of complex fractures; techniques in shoulder surgery; top 10 orthopaedic procedures; treatment of common surgical problems of the foot and ankle; and complex primary and revision total hip and knee arthroplasty. Also new this year is the spine: an overview emphasizing treatment options and techniques.
Summer Institute 2000 offers nonsurgical skills courses as well, such as advanced computer skills for orthopaedic surgeons; retirement planning from the start; patient-physician relationship; and computer skill building–PowerPoint presentations.
"We’ve put together a impressive collection of faculty from around the country," Dr. Beaty says. "These are excellent teachers, and it’s great to have the chance to rub elbows with them during the lab sessions."
The AAOS and the Canadian Orthopaedic Association (COA) are cosponsors of the Summer Institute 2000, so two keynote addresses will be delivered this year. "Welcome to Canada" will be the topic of COA president Cecil H. Rorabeck, MD, while S. Terry Canale, MD, AAOS president, will discuss "The Art of Communication."
