First Clinician Scientist Development Program meeting held

The AAOS/OREF Clinician Scientist Development Program (CSDP), formed by the Clinician Scientist Programs Committee under the Academy’s Council on Academic Affairs, held its inaugural meeting on June 9, 2003 in Charleston, S.C. The seminar was held in conjunction with the American Orthopaedic Association (AOA)/Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF) Resident Leadership Forum at the AOA’s Annual Meeting

The CSDP is a first step in the career path for orthopaedic clinician scientists. It targets residents in their PGY3 and PGY4 training years who have the potential/desire to become clinician scientists. The program is designed to provide prospective clinician scientists with an extensive orientation to orthopaedic research and opportunities in the field.

Eleven residents were chosen to attend the meeting from a pool of those nominated by their orthopaedic residency chairs.

Regis O’Keefe, MD, chair of the Clinician Scientist Programs Committee moderated the program. Thirteen faculty members presented on topics such as "Musculoskeletal Research Areas," "Navigating the NIH," "Grant Writing" and "Negotiating with the Department Chair." The session was very interactive and lengthy discussions ensued between the faculty and the residents following many of the presentations.

On June 10 and 11, the CSDP residents participated in the AOA/OREF/ Zimmer Resident Leadership Forum. This gathering consisted of leadership presentations, ethics discussions and scientific programs.

The Clinician Scientist Programs Committee hopes to maintain continuing contact with the CSDP participants to serve as a mentor throughout the residents’ career progression.
