Applications sought for 2004 AAOS/OREF Clinician Traveling Fellowship Program
Applicants are now being sought for the second annual AAOS/OREF Clinician Scientist Traveling Fellowship Program (CSTFP). Open to AAOS Candidate Members and Fellows, the 2004 CSTFP will provide two orthopaedic clinician scientists the opportunity to spend four weeks visiting the research institutions of their choice. Winners will be announced during the 2004 AAOS Annual Meeting in San Francisco.
Program goals
The CSTFP seeks to provide recipients with:
- Exposure to established musculoskeletal scientists at one or more research sites
- An opportunity to develop a professional relationship with multiple orthopaedic clinician scientists and basic scientists
Eligibility requirements
The program is open to AAOS Candidate Members and Active Fellows.
Travel funding
The Academy will provide each Clinician Scientist Traveling Fellow with $10,000 in funding for expenses during the site visit(s).
Schedule of events
The Traveling Fellowship Program requires a commitment both from the applicant and his/her institution AND from the mentor(s) and his/her institution(s). The fellowship will occur between July 1, 2004 and June 30, 2005.
Each site visit must last at least one week and the cumulative number of weeks spent at all sites must total at least four weeks. The fellowship can be completed at weekly intervals over the course of the year.
Fellows will be expected to provide a written summary of their experiences to the AAOS. They may also be required to give a presentation to AAOS members and leadership.
Application requirements
Applicants for this program must provide:
A competed Traveling Fellowship Program Traveling Fellowship Application form
A Fellowship Proposal that includes:
- Description of Fellowship activities and how they will lead to accomplishing the objectives. Identify site or sites to visit and the duration of each visit. (Each site visit must last at least one week and the cumulative number of weeks spent at all sites must be at least four weeks.)
- Statement of potential impact on your career
- Statement of potential impact on orthopaedics
- Relevance to AAOS objectives
- Estimated budget for all travel (per AAOS committee travel policy) and related expenses; not to exceed $10,000
- Mentor Acknowledgment Form(s)–Obtain approval of your objectives from your proposed mentor(s) and have him/her submit the Mentor Acknowledgement Form.
- Letter of Support from your Department Chair–Obtain a letter from your department chair stating his/her willingness to have you participate in the fellowship and the institution's support for your research. This letter is to be submitted with the application.

Mentor Qualifications
Potential mentors must meet the following qualifications:
- Must be engaged in musculoskeletal research
- Must dedicate at least 25 percent of their time to research activities
- Must conduct externally funded research activities
- Must be familiar with the peer review grant submission and review process
- At least one of the chosen mentors must be an orthopaedic surgeon.
Submitting application materials
Application forms and fellowship proposals must be submitted online by October 1, 2003 via the AAOS Web site at www3.aaos.org/csp/csp.cfm. Supporting documentation and letters of endorsement must also be submitted by October 1 to the U.S. mail/e-mail addresses or fax number listed below. Applicants are responsible for contacting their department chair and mentor to ensure all letters/forms of support are received on time.
