Assuming there are no breakthrough preventative treatments for the conditions that lead to total knee and total hip arthroplasty, by the year 2030 there will be an estimated 454,000 total knee arthroplasty procedures annually, an 85 percent increase from 245,000 in 1996. Also total hip arthroplasty procedures will increase 80 percent to 248,000 from 138,000 in 1996.
The estimates by the Academys department of research and scientific affairs are based on projections of the 1996 incidence rates and population projections. More current statistics for 1997 show that total knee arthroplasty procedures had increased to 259,000 and total hip arthroplasty to 144,000.
