1.2 Analyze changes in the patient population with musculoskeletal disorders and develop and implement programs and policies that address those changes.

1.3 Identify, monitor and/or develop models to deliver musculoskeletal health care that maximize the quality and cost-effectiveness of care.

1.4 As new delivery models are developed, provide programs to assist orthopaedists to reassess their roles, make changes appropriate to local and regional needs.

2.2 Provide educational content in practice management for orthopaedists, including programs to help them with their practices in the changing socioeconomic environment.

2.3 Aggressively promote awareness of Academy educational programs and materials both nationally and internationally.

2.4 Provide educational content in musculoskeletal health care for orthopaedists, other musculoskeletal providers, patients and the public, utilizing the most effective means available.

2.5 Promote awareness of and the need for electronic communications skills, telemedicine and medical informatics. Provide education to members to gain these skills.

2.6 Promote self-directed learning by providing evaluation tools for orthopaedists, residents and residency programs through an ongoing series of examination programs.

2.7 Continue to develop and validate methods to measure the educational effectiveness in both teaching and learning related to our programs and products; implement teaching methods validated as effective.

2.8 Evaluate whether present educational programs and materials on general orthopaedics need to be supplemented and, if required, develop programs and materials to meet this need.

2.9 Evaluate the breadth and depth of our relationships with industry and specialty societies in educational activities.

2.10 Provide educational content on advances in biotechnology relating to patient care, cost-effectiveness and scope of practice for orthopaedists and other providers, and on the ethical implications of biotechnology and changes in health care delivery and financing.

3.2 Regularly determine which health policy and practice issues are important to orthopaedists and what positions the Academy should take in addressing these issues.

3.3 Advocate policies and programs that will preserve access to the highest quality, cost-effective musculoskeletal care for all populations.

3.4 Promote the highest standards of professional and ethical behavior.

3.5 Monitor, collect and analyze data on the musculoskeletal work force for decision makers and become an informational and influential resource on these issues.

3.6 Monitor and analyze liability issues in changing health care delivery systems and report to orthopaedists.

3.7 Advocate fair payment for services provided.

3.8 Monitor, analyze and regularly communicate to the fellowship developing trends and activities in private sector health care delivery.

3.9 With other orthopaedic organizations, encourage orthopaedists to consider careers in health policy.

4.2 Aggressively promote public and private funding for basic and clinical musculoskeletal research, including the activities of the OREF.

4.3 Develop clinical algorithms and practice parameters, and provide analysis of musculoskeletal algorithms, guidelines and parameters developed by others.

4.4 Develop a national database on patients with musculoskeletal problems which will provide useful information on patient care outcomes and resource utilization.

4.5 Monitor and address emerging issues in biotechnology related to research, regulation and patent issues.

4.6 With other orthopaedic organizations, encourage orthopaedists to pursue careers in basic and clinical research.

5.2 Assure that the Academy continues to maintain an organizational structure that is fiscally-responsible and accountable.

5.3 Develop collaborative relationships with orthopaedic state, regional and specialty societies that facilitate joint development of strategies and programs of mutual benefit.

5.4 Implement and use high tech communication capability to interact with members on a regular basis.

5.5 Provide avenues for leadership development to assure that a continuing pool of qualified leaders is available to the Academy.

5.6 Carefully explore the development of shared interest groups within the structure of the Academy, including international members, allied health categories and other appropriate groups.

5.7 Provide a comprehensive array of vehicles which will effectively communicate information that is responsive to the needs and concerns of the members, the public, policymakers and other professionals.

5.8 Assess member needs by using a variety of vehicles that encourage member feedback; and respond to identified needs.

5.9 Develop programs and projects that encourage diversity in the Academy membership so as to meet the needs of all patients.

5.10 Provide a structure and process that is directed toward the attraction and retention of members and applicants.
