The Foundation for Taxpayer and Consumer Rights, based in California, has filed a suit charging Aetna Inc. with racketeering and fraud for false advertising. The suit says Aetna advertised it was dedicated to quality medical care, but that it encourages system-wide cost cutting that undermines medical care. It is believed to be the first suit filed against an HMO under the Federal Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) act.
