The special guest speaker was William W. Tipton, Jr., MD, AAOS director of medical affairs, who spoke on “AAOS Issues of Concern.” The presidential guest speaker was Laurence E. Dahners, MD, former Kappa Delta Award winner and currently professor of orthopaedic surgery at University of North Carolina School of Medicine, who spoke on “Changes in Length of Dense Collagenous Tissue: Growth and Contracture.” Howard B. Condren, MD, made a presentation on the “History of the Society: 1954-2003.”
The scientific session featured presentations on the history of a given field, followed by lectures and panel discussions on current and future trends in that area. Topics included hip arthroplasty, spine surgery, foot and ankle surgery and shoulder/elbow surgery.
