AAOS Report - April, 2005

Vote on AAOS Professional Compliance Program

AAOS fellows have until April 17, 2005 to submit their ballots on proposed bylaws amendments and three Standards of Professionalism (SOPs) that will establish the new Professional Compliance Program. Ballots have been distributed, and fellows may vote online at www.aaos.org/bylaws, by fax (847) 574-7493, or by mailing the ballot to the AAOS Dept. of Research, Attn: Balloting, 6300 North River Road, Rosemont, Ill. 60018. At least 20 percent of all fellows must return the ballot, and two-thirds of those voting must say ‘yes’ for the professional compliance program to be adopted.

Information is available online at www.aaos.org/bylaws. Fellows who need another copy of their ballot or a copy of the background information can call (800) 999-2939 and leave their name, member number and a fax number.

AAOS launched the Professional Compliance Program in response to calls for oversight of orthopaedic expert witness testimony. A special Board Project Team, chaired by David A. Halsey, MD, reviewed the subject and developed procedures to assess, hear and adjudicate grievances regarding fraudulent or misleading expert witness testimony. The Project Team and other volunteers drafted three SOPs establishing a mandatory minimum acceptable standard of conduct for all AAOS fellows and members. Alleged violations of the SOPs may serve as the basis for filing a grievance with the Professional Compliance Program. Obtain additional information about the Professional Compliance and Expert Witness programs by clicking on the Professional Compliance Program logo on the AAOS home page, http://www.aaos.org, or by calling (847) 384-4047.
