December 2001 AAOS Report
2002 Business Meeting to consider Resolutions, Bylaw amendments
The business meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons will take place in Ballroom C of the Dallas Convention Center on Friday, Feb. 15 at 9:30 a.m., immediately followed by the business meeting for the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons, from 10 to 10:30 a.m. The Annual Meeting Resolutions Committee will hold its open hearing on the resolutions on Thursday, Feb. 14, 2002, from 8 to 10 a.m. in the Dallas Convention Center, Room D275. During the open hearing, proponents and opponents may discuss various resolutions, including one to reduce dues by one-half for AAOS Fellows and Candidate Members in full-time active duty in the U.S. Army, Navy or Air Force. The Fellowship will also consider revisions to resolutions adopted by the Fellowship in 1997 regarding AAOS's public relations efforts, routine HIV testing for hospitalized patients, HIV-infected health care workers, and reduced Medicare fees for orthopaedic surgeons.
In addition, several important sets of proposed amendments to the Academy and the Association Bylaws will be considered at the 2002 Annual Meeting. The Annual Meeting Bylaws Committee will conduct its Open Hearing to receive comments on these proposed amendments on Wednesday, Feb. 13, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Dallas Convention Center, Room D275. One group of proposed amendments would modify the resolutions and bylaws amendment process by submitting proposed AAOS resolutions and amendments to the Bylaws to the full Fellowship for voting, by written or electronic ballot, shortly after the Annual Meeting. The other group of proposed amendments would change the composition of the Board of Directors, by eliminating the positions of secretary and second past president and adding the position of secretary of COMSS and a lay member to the Board of Directors. In addition, the treasurer's term would be changed to one three-year term, and this individual would also serve as chair of the Finance Committee. An ex officio treasurer-elect would be elected during the last year of the treasurer's term.
