Names in the news

Cato T. Laurencin, MD, PhD, Lillian T. Pratt distinguished professor and chair of the department of orthopedic surgery at the University of Virginia Health System, was recently elected to the National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine.

Also elected to the Institute of Medicine was Joseph A. Buckwalter, MD, professor and head of the department of orthopaedics and rehabilitation, College of Medicine, University of Iowa, Iowa City.

The Pathways Awareness Foundation honored John Sarwark, MD, head of Chicago's Children's Memorial Hospital's pediatric orthopaedic surgery division, with the first Pioneer Award for his commitment to the organization's mission. Pathways Awareness Foundation is a leader in providing information on the value, resources and best practices of early intervention and therapy for children with physical movement differences and sensory concerns and their families.

Richard Rothman, MD, PhD, chair of orthopaedic surgery at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia, received the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital's Achievement Award in Medicine on Nov. 8,
