Symposia to feature clinical, socioeconomic health care issues

This year's Annual Meeting scientific symposia schedule puts a spotlight on a variety of clinical and socioeconomic health care issues. "Articular Cartilage Regeneration: Chrondrocyte Transplantation and Other Technologies" which generated great interest last year will be held on Saturday, Feb. 15 from 8 to 10 a.m. in the Gateway Ballroom of the Moscone Center. Symposium faculty are Joseph A. Buckwalter, MD, moderator; Tom Minas, MD; Lars Peterson, MD; Shawn W. O'Driscoll, MD; William W. Tomford, MD; and Bertram Zarins, MD. The symposium, "Orthopaedic Challenges in an Aging Population," also will be offered on Saturday from 1:15 to 3:15 p.m. in Room 121 of the convention center. Participants in the symposium are Victor M. Goldberg, MD, moderator; Wilson C. Hayes, PhD; Kenneth J. Koval, MD; Sheldon R. Simon, MD; and Joseph A. Buckwalter, MD. Symposiums dealing with socioeconomic issues include "MSAs: Emerging Alternative System of Health Care Delivery - Tides of Change," moderated by Academy first vice president Douglas W. Jackson, MD; "Measuring Value in the Orthopaedic Practice," moderated by Peter C. Amadio, MD; and "Managing Back Care in a Managed Care Environment," moderated by Steven R. Garfin, MD. In addition, Academy president Kenneth E. DeHaven, MD, will moderate an "Open Forum with Academy Leaders" on Friday, Feb. 14 from 10:15 to 11 a.m. in the Gateway Ballroom. Presentations on current Academy activities as well as a question and answer period will be included in the forum.
