Support Bone and Joint Decade

Kofi Annan, Secretary General of the United Nations is expected to release a letter announcing the UN support of the Bone and Joint Decade 2000-2010. Also, Brazil has become the 15th nation to declare the Bone and Joint Decade. "Musculoskeletal conditions are the number one cause of pain and suffering and the number one reason for visits to physicians' office, but I don't think most people know that," said Stuart Weinstein, MD, chair of the Academy's Bone and Joint Task Force, at a meeting of the task force on Nov, 16. "Orthopaedic surgeons account for just 3 percent of all physicians; by ourselves we have little power," he said. "But by forming a coalition with patient advocacy groups and other musculoskeletal care providers, under the auspices of the Bone and Joint Decade, we'll have the power to accomplish much greater things." All Academy members are urged to call the toll free number (888) 671-4900 and send a fax to President Clinton, urging him to declare the Bone and Joint Decade 2000-2010.
