February 2003 AAOS Report

AAOS offers several all-new coding resources

Several new coding resources are now available from AAOS. Updated for 2003 is the Complete Global Service Data for Orthopaedic Surgery, the only all-inclusive guide for orthopaedic global billing. This two-volume guide, a response to numerous changes to CPT codes, comes complete with four new CPT codes or global packages and 88 revised CPT codes or global packages. The introduction includes updated information about compartments of the knee, describes changes in the generic intraoperative services and explains coding for loose and foreign bodies. This guide details inclusions and exclusions for more than 1,460 musculoskeletal procedures. It is organized into sections by anatomy with a full page devoted to each CPT code. It includes Medicare global fee periods, "add-on" codes and "modifier-51" exempt codes. The cost is $215, $175 for AAOS members.

Also just updated is the CPT®/ICD-9 Cross-Reference for Orthopaedic Surgery. Organized by anatomic area, this reference details how to cross-reference musculoskeletal procedures. It includes both primary and secondary ICD-9 references to each CPT code and spells out exclusions. The material includes fifth-digit breakdown information for localized diagnoses at the start of each section. The softbound publication sells for $130, $105 for AAOS members.

An updated and enhanced Orthopaedic CodeX 2003 has also just been released. The new 2003 CPT® and ICD-9 codes and cross references, along with Global Service Data for Orthopaedic Surgery listings and quarterly updated Medicare RVUs and CCI edits, are all contained in this expansive database. The program also offers an enhanced CCI edits section and improved Search navigation by phrase and body site. CodeX users can export data to prepare their fee schedules by using the convenient RVU Payment Calculator. There are also cross references from ICD-9 to L Codes to durable medical equipment. CodeX is designed to help physicians accurately code the most complicated diagnoses and procedures quickly. The CD-ROM is available for $469, with a $25 charge for each additional user, $379 for AAOS members, including a $15 charge for each additional user. The program is also available in Windows 2000 Server and NT 4.0 versions, for a cost of $725 plus $25 per workstation ($595 for AAOS members and $15 per workstation).
