Both Missouri and Pennsylvania are crisis states in terms of the way the medical liability insurance issue is affecting access to care. Many orthopaedic surgeons, as well as other physicians, have left Pennsylvania. Missouri came close to passing tort reform last year but the legislation was vetoed by the governor. Due to the charged political climate in Pennsylvania and Missouri, the AAOS is working with the orthopaedic state societies in these two states to develop state-specific strategies geared toward the public and the legislature in order to recruit, educate and mobilize a corps of medical liability reform supporters.
