Zachary Friedenberg, MD, one of the featured surgeons in a Legacy of Heroes, has written a book, Hospital at War, in which he chronicles the experiences of the 95th Evacuation Hospital. The hospital, which treated nearly 42,000 Americans between April 1943 and May 1945, was so efficient that 99 percent of the casualties it treated survived. An endowment has been established at the Department of Orthopaedics at Texas Tech University Health Science Center in Lubbock in honor of the former chairman, Eugene J. Dabezies, MD.
Hand surgeon Robert S. Derkash, MD, of Glenwood Springs, Colo., was honored with the 2004 Volunteer Services Award from the American Society for Surgery of the Hand.
Mary I. O’Connor, MD, was recently honored as the 2004 Clinician of the Year at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fla.
Kimberly Templeton, MD, was named by the American Medical Women's Association as a "Local Legend." The honor is presented to American female physicians who have demonstrated commitment, originality, innovation, or creativity in their medical fields.
