AAOS Report - February, 2006

Fellowship to consider new SOPs

A new Standards of Professionalism (SOPs) on Research and Academic Responsibilities will be proposed and discussed at the 2006 Annual Meeting in Chicago, March 22-26. These SOPs were drafted at the request of a special Board Project Team on Intellectual Property and represent the AAOS’ commitment to professional integrity for all orthopaedic surgeons when participating in research protocols, publishing and academia. A fellowship vote on whether to adopt the new SOPs will be held after the 2006 Annual Meeting.

Fellows will have several opportunities to learn about the SOPs on Research and Academic Responsibilities during the 2006 Annual Meeting, including the Bylaws Committee Open Hearing on Thursday, March 23, at 8:00 a.m. in Room S402B and the Business Meetings on Friday, March 24, in the Grand Ballroom of McCormick Place. The Professional Compliance Program will also have a freestanding exhibit in the Resource Center Bookstore in Hall B with copies of the new SOPs and staff available to discuss the program.

If adopted, the SOPs on Research and Academic Responsibilities will become mandatory for all fellows and members. Alleged violations of the SOPs may serve as the basis for a formal grievance to and professional compliance action by the AAOS Board of Directors.
