January 2000 AAOS Report
Unrestricted grant given to Academy for JAAOS
Rhône-Poulenc Rorer, makers of Lovenox, low molecularweight heparin prophylaxis for DVT, has agreed to provide the Academy with a significant unrestricted educational grant that will again be used to support distribution of an updated Journal of the Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons on CD-ROM as a benefit of membership. This year, additional grant funds have been provided to underwrite JAAOS OnLine. In the past eight months, users have accessed thousands of abstracts in eight languages and have downloaded in excess of 175,000 editorial pages from the online version of the journal. Both the updated CD and online versions of JAAOS will contain an important enhancement. Within the reference list of each article published in 1999 and future years, citations from journals listed in Index Medicus/MEDLINE will contain hyperlinks. Clicking a link will enable a reader to instantly access the abstract of that article in Index Medicus/MEDLINE. This will eliminate the need for time-consuming searches through PubMed and other portals.
JAAOS is also in the process of setting up a direct link to AAOS from the MEDLINE search engine, PubMed, so that non-member/non-subscriber MEDLINE users can access JAAOS articles directly from AAOS, rather than having to use intermediary services. Rhône-Poulenc Rorer and Hoechst-Marion-Roussel plan to merge in January. The merged company, to be called Aventis, will be the second largest pharmaceutical firm in the world.
