Board takes action on expert witnesses, direct marketing; approves several statements

The AAOS Board of Directors took several actions at its meeting on Dec. 5-6, 2003 in Chicago. With President James H. Herndon, MD, presiding, the Board approved the concept of an AAOS Expert Witness Testimony Assessment and Disciplinary Program. A project team will be appointed to develop parameters for the new program.

The Board accepted a report by the Patient Safety Committee regarding medical errors and patient safety in Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASC) and approved two patient safety checklists (pre-op and post-op) for use in ASCs. All three items have been posted on the AAOS patient safety Web site.
An anniversary project team was appointed to oversee and coordinate the events and materials associated with the planned commemoration in 2008 of the Academy's 75th anniversary. Robert W. Bucholz, MD, first vice-president, will chair the team.

The Board had endorsed the Surgical Infection Prevention Project Statement on Antimicrobial Prophylaxis for Surgery and approved a new operating plan for the Leadership Fellows Program. It also approved Revised Position Statements on the Use of Knee Braces ( #1124) and on Limiting Resident Duty Hours (#1160). The Board also approved revised Advisory Statements on Wrong-Site Surgery (#1015) and on the Prevention of Medication Errors (#1026) and the Clinical Guideline on Osteoarthritis of the Knee, Phase II.
