Judiciary Committee to hear appeal
In June, an appeal was filed on the recommendations of the Committee on Professionalism (COP) from the AAOS grievance hearing that occurred during the 2006 Annual Meeting. At that hearing, the COP, chaired by Peter J. Mandell, MD, heard testimony and evidence from two fellows (grievant and respondent), who each provided written material to be considered. Under the Professional Compliance Program, alleged violations of the Standards of Professionalism (SOPs) may result in a formal hearing leading to professional compliance action.
Following the grievance hearing, the COP met in executive session to discuss the allegations and reach consensus on recommendations to the Board of Directors. The fellows were advised of the COP’s findings and recommendations within 60 days of the grievance hearing. One of the parties appealed the COP’s recommendations to the Judiciary Committee — chaired by Richard P. Schmidt, MD — which will hear the appeal in August.
After the appeals hearing, recommendations from both the COP and the Judiciary Committee will be presented to the Board of Directors at its next meeting. The fellowship will be advised of all official professional compliance actions taken by the Board of Directors.
