AAOS schedules practice management workshops, introductory coding course

AAOS and KarenZupko & Associates offer orthopaedic coding and practice management workshops. The all-day Friday session, “Reimbursement Strategies and Tactics for Orthopaedists,” covers essential subjects, including the effectiveness of the billing team, top claim submission tips and the reality of financial reports. Saturday’s “Mastering Orthopaedic Coding,” covers topics ranging from the 2006 CPT update to anatomy of an operative note, common coding dilemmas, modifiers and new patient visits versus consultations. Courses are scheduled for the following dates and locations: August 4 – 5, Memphis, Tenn.; Sept. 29 – 30, Arlington, Va.; Oct. 6 – 7, Phoenix; Nov. 10 – 11, Chicago.

The AAOS and KarenZupko & Associates are also offering a new introductory medical record coding course. The new course will provide a thorough introduction to coding principles and payment issues and is geared to new orthopaedic surgeons in practice, new coding and billing staff, as well as other managerial staff new to orthopaedics. This new course, “Core Competencies in Orthopaedic Coding,” is a one-day (6 hours) course that will be offered on July 26 and Sept. 27, in Rosemont, Ill.

The course focuses on how to: 1) fill out a CMS – 1500 claim form, 2) apply principles of evaluation and management coding to coding orthopaedic cases, 3) apply CPT™ and ICD-9 codes to orthopaedic cases, 4) use CPT™ modifiers for E&M and surgical codes correctly and 5) differentiate different types of fractures.
