The Academy launched its new Internet-based on-line communication system on July 1. The system can be accessed through any World Wide Web browser that operates on PC-compatible computers, Macintosh, and many UNIX workstations. The Home Page address (or URL) for the Academy is http://www.aaos.org. The initial phase of the system will contain significant amounts of reference data (position statements, advisory statements, opinions on ethics) and information on CME courses, state and specialty societies, and CD-ROM specifications. Future features will include on-line forums (or discussion groups) for orthopaedic specialties, managed care issues, and current research and health policy activities. Also planned are order entry functions for Academy products, courses, subscriptions, and meeting registration. The AAOS Report and Bulletin as well as information on the 1996 Annual Meeting also will be accessible through the system. The initial segments of the system are open to the public; some future phases only will be available to Academy members. For additional information concerning the system, contact Jim Ogle of the Academy's information services department, (800) 346-2267, ext. 4280 or by using electronic mail, firstname.lastname@example.org.
