July 1997 AAOS Report

Order Version 2.0 instruments for MODEMS™

The Academy's Committee on Outcomes Studies will introduce Version 2.0 of its outcomes data collection instruments. Revised questionnaires for lower limb; arm, shoulder and hand; pediatrics; and spine are being developed for use in any type of outcomes assessment studies for musculoskeletal care, and for current and future subscribers of MODEMS™ - the Academy's outcomes data collection program. New software vendors also will be added to the program. Currently, subscribers can select software from five vendors. By October, there will be 10 to 12 software vendors available. Since its introduction in November 1996, MODEMS™ enabled more than 90 orthopaedic surgeons and their practices to evaluate and document the outcomes of the musculoskeletal care they offer patients as well as compare their outcomes to a national database. Subscribers to MODEMS™ pay a one-time fee of $500 to initialize the database and an annual fee of $500 for each participating practitioner affiliated with the subscriber. A videotape explaining the importance of outcomes data collection and how it can be used to improve patient care also is available for potential subscribers who express interest in enrolling in the MODEMS™ program.
