June 1998 AAOS Report

Institute board meets for first time

The Board of Directors of the Musculoskeletal Education and Research Institute met May 17-18 at the Hotel Sofitel in Rosemont, Ill. At its first meeting, the board discussed establishing criteria that could be used to judge the success of the Institute and the participation of musculoskeletal providers, not just Academy members. Initially, as its primary purpose, the Institute will oversee the research and administration involved with the Musculoskeletal Outcomes Data Evaluation and Management System (MODEMS). Members of the board include representatives from the Academy, consumer groups, industry, health services research and other musculoskeletal organizations. The board elected Barry P. Simmons, MD, president, and Richard G. Fessler, MD, PhD, American Association of Neurological Surgeons, secretary/treasurer. Other board members are Kenneth E. DeHaven, MD; Michael J. Goldberg, MD; Gene E. Swanson, MD; Matthew H. Liang, MD; David A. Bergman, MD, (American Academy of Pediatrics); Norman A. Johanson, MD; Ronald L. Kaufman, MD, (American College of Rheumatology); Debra Lappin, (Arthritis Foundation); and Les Sprinkle, (Smith & Nephew, Inc.). Each board member also will participate in one or more of three committees-Business, Scientific Affairs or Questionnaire committees. The board plans to meet several times in 1998.
