Members of the Board of Councilors made their annual trip to Capitol Hill as part of the National Orthopaedic Leadership Conference (NOLC), April 29-May 2, to visit legislators and listen to presentations about future health care legislation on a national and state level. The orthopaedic surgeons visited the offices of Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-Miss.), Sen. John Breaux (D-La.) and Rep. Pete Stark (D-Calif.). They also visited the legislative staff of Rep. Bill Archer (R-Texas), chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee. The councilors discussed the importance of including basic patient protections in health care bills; supporting legislation that would clarify certain provisions of "Stark II;" and encouraging the development of an insurance program to protect volunteer physician service in the U.S. The NOLC featured guest speakers Rep. David Weldon (R-Fla.) and Rep. Robert T. Matsui (D-Calif.) who provided an overview of pending health care legislation in Congress.
