AAOS Report - March, 2005

Vote on Standards of Professionalism

A representative cadre of fellows and members participated in lively discussions about the proposed AAOS Professional Compliance Program and proposed Standards of Professionalism (SOPs) at the 2005 Annual Meeting. Now AAOS fellows have the opportunity to vote on three SOPs as well as on the bylaws amendments that must be adopted to establish the Professional Compliance Program. Ballots will be mailed in a few weeks.

If adopted, SOPs for Orthopaedic Expert Witness Testimony, Professional Relationships and Providing Musculoskeletal Services to Patients will set the minimum acceptable conduct for orthopaedic surgeons and will apply to all AAOS fellows and members, including associate and affiliate members. Alleged violations of these SOPs may serve as the basis for a grievance under the Professional Compliance Program.

Fellows and members may access the bylaws amendments, proposed SOPs, and other information related to the Professional Compliance Program online. All information connected to the Professional Compliance Program is password protected. Simply click on the Professional Compliance Program logo on the AAOS home page at www.aaos.org

It is important to vote. If less than 20 percent of the fellowship votes on the proposed bylaws amendments or SOPs, they will not be adopted. In addition, if less than two-thirds of those voting fail to vote in favor of the proposed bylaws amendments and SOPs they will not be adopted. Send questions and comments to professionalcompliance@aaos.org.
