AAOS member and former chair, Professional Liability Committee, Steven S. Fountain, MD, chairman, Norcal Insurance Co., Saratoga, Calif., is one of eight physicians on a panel of physicians, nurses, pharmacists and other patient safety experts to advise the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) in the development of its first set of National Patient Safety Goals. The 22-member group will initially conduct a thorough review of all existing Sentinel Event Alert recommendations and identify those that are candidates for inclusion in the annual National Patient Safety Goals. The goals eventually recommended by the advisory group will be forwarded to JCAHO's Board of Commissioners for final action. The first set of six National Patient Safety Goals will be announced in July. Noncompliance will result in a Requirement for Improvement (Type I Recommendation). Others physician panelists are: James P.
