AAOS Board approves participation in ICAMRL
The AAOS Board of Directors, meeting Sept. 7 and 8, 2001, approved sponsorship and participation in the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Magnetic Resonance Laboratories (ICAMRL). Two years ago, Aetna informed the AAOS that it would require physicians who perform MRIs in their offices to be accredited in order to be reimbursed for those services. At the time, the American College of Radiology (ACR) had the only accreditation program for MRIs, and it is almost impossible for nonradiologists to be accredited under the ACR program. The ICAMRL, which has accreditation programs for echocardiography, nuclear and vascular labs, agreed to develop an accreditation program for MRIs. Recent laws were passed in Connecticut and Florida and a bill is pending in Michigan, which require ACR accreditation for all MRI facilities, including in-office MRIs. The AAOS health policy department is working with ICAMRL to have the states recognize the ICAMRL accreditation program in addition to the ACR program.
