October 2001 AAOS Report

Clinical guideline on knee surgery approved by AAOS Board

At its meeting on Sept. 7-8, the Board of Directors approved the AAOS Clinical Guideline on Knee Injury, created to improve patient care by outlining the appropriate information-gathering and decision-making processes involved in managing acute knee injuries in adults. William Maloney, MD, discussed progress in gathering information on the establishment of a proposed joint registry. The registry would inform the profession of the joint replacement procedures and prosthesis that are successful and those that are not in order to reduce the rate of joint replacement revisions in the United States. The AAOS has proposed a workshop in December, bringing together leading experts on joint replacement surgery and joint registries in the U.S. and other nations. James Wright, MD, reported that he and James Weinstein, DO, MS, will work with the AAOS on development of a grant proposal for National Institute of Health funding of a study of geographic variation in hip and knee arthroplasty
