October 2003 AAOS Report

AAOS Liability Campaign hails passage of Proposition 12 in Texas

The AAOS played a role in the passage of constitution of Texas. Earlier this year, the Texas legislature passed tort reform capping physician liability for non-economic damages at $250,000. Proposition 12 specifically authorizes the Texas legislature to cap non-economic damages in medical professional liability cases.

As part of its Medical Liability Reform Campaign, the AAOS awarded $75,000 to the Texas Orthopaedic Association (TOA). After the legislation passed, the TOA and its coalition partners began educating the public on the need for a constitutional amendment. TOA used its AAOS support for public relations efforts in the push toward Proposition 12.

The AAOS medical liability campaign depends on members' generous support. Your participation may mean the passage of both federal and state tort reform similar to that in Texas. All AAOS members are strongly urged to contribute to the Medical Liability Reform Campaign. Personal or corporate checks made out to the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons can be sent to
