AAOS Board approves Professional Compliance Program’s grievance process
Fellows, members and the general public now have online access to a new component of the Professional Compliance Program. At its September 2005 meeting, the AAOS Board of Directors finalized and approved procedures that detail the process for handling formal grievances, from initial filing with the Office of General Counsel to the final professional compliance action taken as determined by the Board of Directors. Access to these procedures is available through the Professional Compliance Program section of the AAOS Web site.
The Professional Compliance Program procedures represent extensive work by the Expert Witness Board Project Team, chaired by David A. Halsey, MD. These procedures permit fellows and members to file grievances against other fellows and members for alleged violations of the Standards of Professionalism (SOPs). In addition, the procedures provide fellows and members with substantial due process, including a minimum of two opportunities to be heard by committees of their peers and the Board of Directors. The procedures designate the AAOS Board of Directors as the final decision-making body in all professional compliance matters.
