The Academy's Committee on Infections has developed a series of articles based on current knowledge of HIV, transmission of blood-borne diseases in the health care setting and other topics that will appear in future issues of the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons: A Comprehensive Review. The first article in the series "Transmission of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Infection in the Surgical Setting" will be published in the September issue. It was written by the Committee on Infections chairman James V. Luck Jr., MD with committee members David M. Bell, MD and Daniel R. Benson, MD; and committee consultants Dale B. Glasser, PhD and Mary E. Chamberland, MD, MPH and Huan Chang, MD, of the CDC. It will be followed by a second article on HIV by Dr. Luck and subsequently by other articles on tuberculosis, hepatitis B and C and antimicrobial-resistant microorganisms. Orthopaedic surgeons are encouraged to read the articles.
