Registration packets for the Academy's 65th Annual Meeting, March 19-23, 1998, at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans will be sent to members in mid-October. Attendees are encouraged to submit their registration forms by the advance deadline date of Feb. 4, 1998; the deadline to secure housing in New Orleans is Feb. 13, 1998. Advance registration is encouraged. Registration forms can be sent by mail, fax or through a special section on the Academy's home page. Detailed instructions are included in the preliminary program.
Several important changes have been made to this year's Annual Meeting schedule. Technical exhibit halls will be open on Thursday, March 19 to Saturday, March 21; they will be closed on Sunday and Monday, March 22-23. The convention center will remain open to attendees on Specialty Day (Sunday) and on Monday to view scientific and poster exhibits, multimedia education center and attend instructional courses and scientific paper presentations. The Academy has scheduled one annual business meeting to be held on Saturday, March 21 at 11:15 a.m. in the La Louisianne ballroom of the convention center. Previously, the Academy held two business meetings. All Academy members are encouraged to attend this meeting.
Academy members also are encouraged to attend the Resolution Committee's open hearing on Thursday, March 19, beginning at 2 p.m., to discuss the resolutions under consideration at the Annual Meeting. The Bylaws Committee holds an open hearing on Friday, March 20, beginning at 10 a.m., to receive comments on proposed amendments. Both committees present their recommendations at the annual business meeting.
Academy president Douglas W. Jackson, MD, has invited Francis Collins, MD, to be the presidential guest speaker on Friday, March 20 at noon. Dr. Collins is the director of the National Human Genome Research Institute and will discuss the human genome project and the future of medicine.
