Exhibitors advisory Council plays important role

The success of the Annual Meeting depends on a lot on the behind-the-scenes activities by groups that are never known to the thousands of orthopaedic surgeons and other health care professionals who attend each year. One example is the Exhibitors Advisory Council that plays an important role in the success of the Technical Exhibits, which this year includes 425 companies in Halls A and B, displaying a wide array of scientific and educational exhibits.

The council meets twice a year to discuss the needs of all the exhibitors - large, medium and small, says Mike Smith, chairman of the committee and manager of medical education, Medtronic Sofamor Danek.

"We discuss issues brought to our attention, brainstorm and find out what works for the doctors and for the exhibitors," Smith said. "We submit our ideas to the Academy and they may or may not agree." Representing the AAOS at the meetings of the 11-member Council are Carole Murphy, director, department of convention and meeting services; and Cindy Tomala, exhibits manager."We discuss issues brought to our attention, brainstorm and find out what works for the doctors and for the exhibitors," Smith said. One of the issues under discussion for several years, which is being implemented this year, is changing the days when the Technical Exhibits are open. This year, the exhibits are open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and will not be open Saturday or Sunday. This is a change from the Thursday through Saturday schedule of previous years.

Other exhibitor issues range from lead tracking systems and name badges to hotel space, Smith said. The group will meet again after this Annual Meeting to continue the process of sorting through the issues.

Members of Exhibitors Advisory Council are Yin Becker, Howmedica Osteonics; Jean-Paul Burtin, Encore; Roger Boggs, DePuy, Inc., a Johnson and Johnson Company; Gail Case, Smith & Nephew Endoscopy; B.J. Chang, SurgiTel/General Scientific Corp.; Joe Drompp, Becker Orthopaedic; Kelly Carper Erickson, Sulzer Orthopedics; Linda Fox, The American Journal of Orthopaedics; Robyn Murray, OsteoImplant Technology; and James Venduras, Wyeth Ayerst Laboratories.
