Creating a Dynamic Resort Destination In Anaheim

By Charles Ahlers, President of the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau

The Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau welcomes the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons to Anaheim. I'm sure you've noticed the magnitude of building activity in and around the Anaheim Convention Center, and wondered what's happening.

It is undeniable that something tremendous is happening in the Anaheim area. This project is described by some as the "reinventing" of the destination. It is considered the largest public and private development project in the state of California, a $4.2 billion investment in Anaheim's future. The working slogan for this dramatic evolution currently taking place within the city is being called, Imagination At Work.

Specifically, the City of Anaheim and Disney have partnered together to create a new and dynamic resort destination. The project includes many elements, the cornerstones being a redesigned and expanded Anaheim Convention Center and brand new $1.4 billion Disney theme park, built adjacent to the Disneyland.

Anaheim is building a meeting place custom-made for the 21st Century. Spacious walkways lined with majestic palm trees and brilliant landscaping will surround the new architectural achievement. The building itself will feature nearly a quarter mile of sweep-ing naturally sunlit lobby space and will provide delegates and exhibitors with a casual and sophisticated ambiance in which to meet.

There will also be an array of state-of-the-art, multi-level meeting rooms. Adjoining this space are massive exhibit halls, that together with the existing space will bring the center's total to more than 800,000 square feet of exhibit space. When complete in the year 2000, the Anaheim Convention Center will have 1.4 million gross square feet, making it the largest convention center on the West Coast.

Just across the street from the Center, Disney's magic is working overtime, as they are creating a brand new land of imagination. Disney's California Adventure is currently being built adjacent to the original Disneyland.

It will celebrate the richness, diversity and pioneering spirit of the Golden State. Visitor's will experience everything from California beach culture to soaring on hang gliders while viewing California's natural beauty and even opportunities to explore animation up close. Additionally, a luxury 750-guest room hotel will be built with-in the theme park itself. Adjoining the new theme park and hotel will be an artistically themed Downtown Disney, filled with a variety of nightlife, shopping and dining venues.

The new developments will be surrounded by landscaping that will build on the best of the Southern California outdoor lifestyle. This lush greenery will be a signature feature of the new Anaheim Resort district.

As we all look forward to the dawning of a new century, we at the Anaheim/Orange County Visitor and Convention Bureau, are hopeful that in the not too distant future, we can welcome back the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Convention to this exciting new destination called Anaheim.
