Raise money for charity and run with the sun
By Peter Pollack
The sun has just broken the horizon and hasn’t yet begun to warm the streets. A pleasant breeze blows gently across an otherwise deserted embarcadero. To the east, modern skyscrapers tower over one of the world’s prettiest cities. To the west, waves lift and roll cabin cruisers moored to their docks. An early morning run along the shores of San Diego can be a spiritual experience—made even more so when you are among your peers and raising money for the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation (OREF).
If this sounds like fun, be sure you sign up for the AAOS 2007 Annual Meeting Sunrise 5K (3.1 miles) Run. The cost is $25, and all of the proceeds go to support OREF research. In return, participants will receive a commemorative short-sleeve T-shirt and a photo of themselves crossing the finish line. Water stops will also be available at strategic points along the race course.
The 5K Run booth will be open today and Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Sails Pavilion of the San Diego Convention Center. The booth also has T-shirts and race numbers. Only 300 participants will be accepted in the race, so sign up early if you want to be guaranteed a place on the starting line.
Once you’ve signed up, be sure to stop by the 5K Run booth and pick up your T-shirt and race number. At 5:45 a.m. on Friday, everyone will meet on the embarcadero behind the San Diego Marriott Marina Hotel for announcements and a quick warm-up. The run along the shoreline begins at 6 a.m.
At the end of the race, refreshments will be available, and medals will be awarded in various age and gender categories. Finish-line photos will be available at the 5K Run booth after 2 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
The Sunrise 5K Run promises you the opportunity to feel good, see a beautiful city, and raise money for a worthy cause. What better way to top off the AAOS Annual Meeting?
