AAOS offers free Internet web sites to members

AAOS is putting the power of the Internet in the hands of members by offering a free web site template for their practice.

This electronic connection to the Wide World Web will enable members to connect to their patients and the public. The Internet project was a high priority of 1999 AAOS President Robert D. D’Ambrosia, MD, who sees it as a way to enhance the traditional physician-patient relationship. And, by linking the physician’s web site to the AAOS patient education resources, it will allow the patient to become more informed and take a more self-determined role in his or her care, Dr. D’Ambrosia said. If patients are informed prior to their office visit, the time spent with the patient can focus more on exploring solutions to the patient’s complaint rather than explaining the problem.

AAOS members can choose one of two web site templates that can be personalized and posted on the Internet. Members will be able to display their name and photo, educational background, board certification, focus and affiliations. They will be able to list their office location with a street map, their office hours and insurance plans accepted.

The web site also will allow members to communicate with their patients and the public in a "Message from Your Physician." It gives the orthopaedic surgeon an opportunity to talk about his or her practice and practice style and to reach out to patients and the public.

Members also will be able to connect their patients and public with the patient information resources that the AAOS has developed and posted on its patient-public information web site—"Your Orthopaedic Connection." The site will be continually expanded with patient-public education materials written for several levels of interest—basic, clinical and scientific.

Members can create their own web site by completing forms that can be accessed from the "Member Services" section or "What’s New" section of the AAOS home page www.aaos.org.

If members have a properly scaled electronic photo and a logo of their practice they can include them when building their site. Or, members can send the photo, with their member identification number on the back, and logo to Mary Ann Nicholson at the Academy, 6300 N. River Rd., Rosemont, Ill. 60018. AAOS will scale photos to size; the photos will not be returned.
