COGME urges more minority enrollment

The Council on Graduate Medical Education (COGME) recommended in June that medical schools admit more minorities, using affirmative action programs that can meet legal challenges.

In 1997, 1,770 underrepresented minorities entered medical schools, or 11 percent of the total. COGME wants 4,500 minorities entering medical school by 2010. To recruit more students, COGME recommended schools put less emphasis on test scores and more on subjective features such as the ability to overcome challenges.
