Ernest Fletcher, MD, a family physician, was elected to the House of Representatives in Tuesday's elections bringing to eight the number of physicians in that body. With Sen. Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) there are now nine physicians in Congress, the highest number to serve at one time.
Dr. Fletcher will represent the 6th district in Kentucky. Other physicians in the House are psychiatrist Jim McDermott, MD, (D-Wash.); family physician Victor Snyder (D-Ark.); family physician Tom Coburn (R-Okla.); ophthalmologist John Cooksey (R-La.); plastic and reconstructive surgeon Greg Ganske (R-Iowa); ob-gyn Ron Paul (R-Texas); and internist Dave Weldon (R-Fla.)
