AMA reports orthopaedists income down 5.6% in 1998
The annual AMA Physician Socioeconomic Statistics report, a survey of 3,300 physicians, found the average nonfederal U.S. physicians earned $194,400 in 1998, down $2,200 or 1 percent from the previous year. It was the first decline since 1994. The median income was down 2.4 percent to $160,000 in 1998, the third consecutive decline. The report found otolaryngologists income fell 9.6 percent to $208,000 and orthopaedic surgeons income was down 5.6 percent to $312,500.
